*Organizing first* Because everything we do depends on it.

Good organizing will benefit busy career singles, busy families and seniors in three ways:

  • Ongoing safety

  • functionality of space

  • Accessibility and timing

After organizing, you may even decide to follow through with a decor by accessorizing and adding new furnishings where necessary to create a fresh new look. Here is a list of my organizing blogs that may interest you

How to make a free standing shelf.

Supplies: 72 x 11-1/4 (L x W) hard board or any type of board you prefer. Empty decorative boxes of which you can always get on sale at Michael’s. The only other thing you will need are the items/objects to be stored inside the boxes. Yes that’s it. No hammers, nails drills or screws.

These boards are soft, and therefore are easy to warp downward when heavy objects are placed on them. So only wise to only use very light objects. I stored old VHS cassettes in them. I will not be using them any time soon so are fine sitting in these boxes. So also only store things you want to keep but won’t need to access any time soon.

Each box is Approximately 11 x 7-5/8 x 4-5/16 (L x W x H). The height of the box includes the lid. Don’t fuss over the exact measurements though, just get the boxes you like and take it from there.

I used two boxes on the third shelf and three boxes on all the others. Using three boxes gave me a total height of about 13”. This height gave a lot of wiggle room.

I had my boards cut at half way which is 36” to break up the length which in my experience helps to lessen the amount of warping.

Process: Have the boards cut where you purchase them. I purchased all three at my home depot. I payed under 10.00 CN at the time (maybe about 5yrs ago). Decide on the amount of shelves you want.

Place the first shelf on the ground. This shelf does not need cutting because it will be on a hard surface so warping won’t be an issue. The ones above, yes cut them in half! The boxes and boards are a perfect fit both width and lengthwise.

Place all your memorabilia inside each box. Then add your first boxes, aligning them along the short end of the board of your bottom shelf. Add your other boxes in the centre of the board and do the same at the other end.

Place one half of your board on top of the box (left end ) so that the bottom board and this 2nd board are even with each other. Make sure the boxes align with the boxes below. This 2nd board should go as far as the to the center of the middle boxes so that when you add the other half they will both meet.

Continue with is process until you’ve completed your free standing shelf.
